Do you know the difference between MCB and MCCB?
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) and MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) are commonly used protective devices in electrical systems. There are obvious differences between the two in terms of design, function, application scenarios, etc. The following are the specific differences:
Ⅰ. Definition and core functions
- MCB (miniature circuit breaker)
Also known as a small circuit breaker, it is mainly used in low-voltage power distribution systems to protect circuits and equipment from overload and short circuits. It can also connect and disconnect circuits under normal circumstances. It has a compact structure and simple operation. It is generally installed in distribution boxes or household power circuits.
- MCCB (molded case circuit breaker)
Also known as a molded case circuit breaker, it is also used in low-voltage power distribution systems. In addition to overload and short-circuit protection, some models also have ground fault protection, undervoltage protection and other functions, which can achieve protection and control in more complex circuit environments.
Ⅱ. Key differences comparison
- Rated current range
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is usually 1A - 125A, and common specifications are mostly below 63A.
MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) has a wider range, generally 16A - 1600A, and some models can reach 2500A.
- Breaking capacity
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) has a lower breaking capacity, generally 6kA - 15kA (depending on the model).
MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) has a stronger breaking capacity, up to 10kA - 150kA, suitable for high current scenarios.
- Protection function
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) basic functions are overload and short circuit protection, and some models can add leakage protection (such as RCBO).
In addition to overload and short circuit protection, MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) can be configured with ground fault protection (EFP), undervoltage/overvoltage protection, long delay/short delay trip adjustment, etc., and the protection function is more flexible.
- Structure and installation method
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is small in size, mostly single-pole (1P), two-pole (2P), etc., and is installed on a rail, occupying a small space.
MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) shell is plastic or epoxy resin molded, large in size, usually 3-pole or 4-pole, can be fixed by screws or installed on a rail, and some models support drawer-style installation.
- Operation method
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is manually operated, and the handle directly controls the opening and closing, without an electric operating mechanism (except for some high-end models).
MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) can be manually operated, or it can be configured with an electric operating mechanism, remote control module, etc., and is suitable for automatic control systems.
- Application scenario
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is mainly used for lighting and socket circuits in homes and small commercial buildings, or circuit protection of small equipment (such as household appliances and office equipment).
MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) is suitable for industrial power distribution systems (such as motor control centers, distribution cabinets), main circuits or branch circuits of large commercial buildings, and protection of medium and large motors, transformers and other equipment.
III. Typical application cases
Common scenarios of MCB:
- Control lighting, sockets, air conditioners and other circuits in household distribution boxes (such as 16A MCB for ordinary sockets, 32A MCB for air conditioner circuits).
- Protection of lighting systems and small motors (such as fans and water pumps) in small shops.
Common scenarios of MCCB:
- Main circuit protection of motors in industrial plants (such as using 100A MCCB when controlling motors above 7.5kW).
- Main switches of low-voltage distribution cabinets in commercial buildings (such as main circuit breakers of floor distribution boxes in office buildings, with rated currents of more than 200A).
- Circuit protection of large equipment such as generators and transformers requires MCCBs with high breaking capacity.
Ⅳ. Summary and selection suggestions
Select MCB: When the circuit current is small (≤100A), the protection function requirements are simple (only overload + short circuit), and the installation space is limited (such as home, small place), MCB is a more economical and practical choice.
Select MCCB: If the current is large, the breaking capacity requirement is high, the protection function needs to be flexibly configured (such as industrial control, large power distribution system), or remote control and electric operation are required, MCCB is given priority.
In practical applications, the two are often used together: MCCB is used as the main circuit switch, and MCB is used as the branch circuit switch to form hierarchical protection and improve system safety and reliability.
