A frequency converter (VFD) is a power control device that utilizes frequency conversion and microelectronics technology to control AC motors by varying the frequency and amplitude of the motor's operating power supply. VFD selection is a crucial technical decision, directly determining the performance, cost, safety, and reliability of the entire drive system and forming the cornerstone of a project's success.

Step 1: Confirm the core parameters of the motor (the basis of everything)

1. Rated voltage (V): Must match the factory grid voltage.
2. Rated power (P): Used as a reference for preliminary screening.
3. Rated current (I): The most critical parameter. The inverter's continuous output current must be ≥ the motor's rated current.
4. Rated frequency (f): Typically 50Hz or 60Hz.
5. Rated speed (n): For example, 1480 rpm.

 

Note: When selecting a motor, "current matching" is more important than "power matching." A 7.5kW 6-pole motor draws much more current than a 4-pole motor, so choosing based on power alone will lead to errors.

 

Step 2: Analyze the load type (determine the inverter grade and capacity)

1. Constant-torque load: Capacity selection focuses on current: inverter rated current ≥ motor rated current × 1.1-1.2 times (safety margin).
2. Variable-torque load: Capacity selection: inverter rated power ≥ motor rated power.
3. Constant-power load: Selection is complex. The inverter capacity should be selected based on the maximum operating current (usually at the lowest speed), ensuring that overvoltage is not exceeded at high speeds.

 

Step 3: Determine Capacity

1. Select by current (the most accurate and reliable method, especially suitable for wound motors, special motors, or motors that don't fully match the standard power rating.)
2. Select by power (this method has limitations. If the motor has many poles, such as a 6-pole or 8-pole motor, the rated current will be very high, and selecting by power may result in errors. In this case, the current must be verified.)

 

Step 4: Select necessary functions and features

Control mode:

V/F control: low cost, suitable for occasions where high control accuracy is not required, such as fans, water pumps, and ordinary conveyor belts.

Vector control (sensorless/with encoder feedback): High control accuracy, fast dynamic response, and high starting torque. Suitable for cranes, hoists, extruders, machine tools and other demanding applications.

Key features:

Momentary power failure without stopping: it can continue to operate after a momentary power failure.

PID control: used for closed-loop control of processes such as pressure, flow, and temperature (commonly used in fans and water pumps).

Multi-speed operation: preset multiple speed gears.

Communication interface: whether it is necessary to communicate with upper systems such as PLC and DCS through protocols such as PROFIBUS and Modbus.

 

Step 5: Consider the installation environment and auxiliary accessories

1. Protection Level:
IP20: Suitable for installation in electrical control cabinets.
IP54: Suitable for use in dusty and humid environments.

2. Installation Environment:
Cooling Method: Wall-mounted (natural cooling), Cabinet-mounted (fan cooling).
Ambient Temperature: Standard operating temperature is -10°C to +40°C (or 50°C). If the ambient temperature is too high, reduce the inverter capacity or select a larger inverter.

3. Required Options:
Input/Output Reactors:
Input reactors: suppress grid harmonics and protect the inverter. Recommended installation when the power supply capacity is large (transformer power > 10 times the inverter power) or when the grid voltage is unbalanced.
Output reactors: Required when the cable connecting the inverter and motor is longer than 50 meters (unshielded cable) to suppress output inrush current and protect motor insulation.

 

Selecting a frequency converter is a systematic process that requires comprehensive consideration of factors such as the motor, load, application scenario, and environment. Correct selection is key to ensuring stable, efficient, and long-lasting operation of the equipment.
