I. Normal Heating Conditions

Circuit breakers, terminals, and wires in a distribution box will generate heat due to resistance when current flows through them. Heating within acceptable limits is normal:

1. Warm Feel, approximately 35-40℃: When current flows through the circuit breakers and wires in the distribution box, Joule heat will be generated due to conductor resistance and contact resistance. When high-power appliances such as air conditioners, ovens, and electric water heaters are used in the home, the internal temperature of the box may be 10-20℃ higher than the ambient temperature, and the outer casing may feel slightly warm to the touch. This is normal operating behavior.

2. Uniform Heating at Multiple Points: The temperature of all switches and wiring points is basically the same; no single point is particularly hot.

 

II. Abnormal Overheating

Any of the following situations indicates a potential malfunction and requires immediate investigation:

1. Extremely Hot to the Touch: The back of your hand feels so hot that you want to pull it back, indicating a temperature exceeding 70℃. This usually signifies overload or poor contact.

2. Localized Significantly Hotter Areas: The upper or lower wiring of a particular switch is extremely hot, while other areas are normal. This is a typical sign of loose wiring screws or loose wire crimping.

3. Burning or Plastic Smell: This is a dangerous signal that the insulation material is decomposing due to heat.

4. Accompanying Abnormal Noises: Hearing a "buzzing" or "ticking" discharge sound may indicate internal contact arcing.

5. Discoloration or Deformation of the Box or Panel: Yellowing or deformation of the plastic panel indicates prolonged overheating.

 

III. Potential Risks and Hazards

When the distribution box is in an overheated state for a long period, it can lead to multiple hidden dangers:

1. Accelerated Equipment Aging: High temperatures significantly shorten the lifespan of internal components, causing insulation aging, brittleness, and even breakdown.

2. Causes equipment failure: Overheating can destabilize the mains power supply, leading to frequent circuit breaker tripping or degrading equipment protection performance, affecting normal circuit protection.

3. Causes electrical fires: This is the most serious consequence. Prolonged overheating is one of the main causes of electrical fires. Statistics show that fires caused by electrical faults account for 32.3% of all fires nationwide, with electrical circuit faults accounting for over 60% of these.
