The Difference Between 3P Circuit Breaker And 4P Circuit Breaker

The fundamental difference between 3P and 4P circuit breakers lies in the number of wires (pole counts) they can simultaneously disconnect (or connect). Simply put: a 3P circuit breaker controls three wires: three phase wires (hot wires). A 4P circuit breaker controls four wires: three phase wires (hot wires) + one neutral wire (neutral wire).

Main Applications Pure three-phase balanced load (such as three-phase motor) Three-phase unbalanced system with single-phase load, main power switch, and occasions with special safety requirements

 Detailed analysis

1. 3P circuit breaker

Function: It has three internal interlocking contacts that simultaneously connect and disconnect the three phase conductors. It does not control the neutral conductor (N).

Operating Principle: When a fault such as a short circuit or overload occurs, the circuit breaker trips, disconnecting the three phase conductors and de-energizing the load. However, the neutral conductor remains connected.

Application Scenarios:
Pure three-phase balanced loads: Typical applications include three-phase motors and three-phase electric furnaces. These devices do not require a neutral conductor, or when the three phases are perfectly balanced, the neutral current is zero.
Cost and Space: Compared to 4P circuit breakers, 3P circuit breakers are less expensive and take up less space in the distribution box.

2. 4P circuit breaker

Function: It has four interlocking contacts that can simultaneously connect or disconnect three phase conductors and one neutral conductor.

Operating Principle: When tripped, it disconnects all live conductors (three phase conductors and one neutral conductor), completely isolating the load from the power supply.

Application Scenarios (Why Disconnect the Neutral Line?):

Safety Inspection: When used as the main power switch, all live conductors must be disconnected to ensure the absolute safety of maintenance personnel. In an unbalanced three-phase system, voltage may exist on the neutral line (no longer at zero potential). If only the phase lines are disconnected, there is still a risk of electric shock when touching the neutral line.
Presence of Single-Phase Loads: In typical building power distribution systems (380V/220V systems), there are both three-phase devices (such as central air conditioners) and single-phase devices (such as lighting and outlets). These single-phase devices draw power from between the phase and neutral lines, causing system imbalance. In these cases, a 4P circuit breaker is necessary to ensure the neutral line can be safely disconnected.
Preventing Neutral Line Overloads: In modern power distribution systems, the third harmonics generated by numerous nonlinear loads (such as computers and LED lights) can cause the neutral line current to increase abnormally, even exceeding the phase line current. A 4P circuit breaker provides protection against overloads.

Regulatory requirements: According to electrical installation specifications (such as China's GB standard and international IEC standards), in certain grounding systems (such as the TT system), a four-pole switch must be used to ensure that all live conductors can be disconnected in the event of a fault.
